THE STORY BEHIND THE custom PET PORTRAITS

The Artist Behind Every Pet Portrait

I’m Ruben Baghdasaryan, an artist based in Los Angeles.

For over a decade, I’ve created original artwork for collectors, fashion houses, and private clients around the world. Ruben Studio Pet grew from something much more personal—my bond with my own dog, Lukas.

What began as a simple hope to capture the quiet personality of one companion became a way to celebrate the animals that become part of our families. Every custom pet portrait is hand drawn by me using archival materials, with careful attention to expression, character, and the details that make each companion unforgettable.

My goal is simple: to create original pet portraits you’ll treasure for years to come.

CUSTOM PET PORTRAITS

Hand-Drawn Pet Portraits, Made to Be Treasured

Every pet has a look that belongs only to them — the tilt of a head, the way light catches their eyes, the quiet way they settle in at the end of the day. A custom pet portrait captures that presence in a way no photograph can. Each piece is drawn entirely by hand, one portrait at a time, in my Los Angeles studio using professional graphite on premium paper. There are no prints, no digital filters, and no shortcuts — only hours of careful observation and craftsmanship.

These are original works of fine art, created for people who want something more lasting than a phone photo. Whether you are celebrating a lifelong companion, marking a birthday or adoption anniversary, or looking for personalized pet gifts for someone who loves their animal as much as you love yours, a hand-drawn portrait becomes a keepsake that is passed down for generations.

Dog portraits are the heart of this studio. From the soft folds of a puppy's ear to the silver around a senior dog's muzzle, every detail is rendered with patience and intention. I work from your reference photo to capture not just a likeness, but the expression that makes your dog unmistakably yours — the bright, expectant eyes, the familiar posture, the personality that fills the room. Single and double-subject portraits are available, and every drawing is an original, never reproduced.

Cats are subtle. Their character lives in the set of the ears, the shape of the eyes, the particular angle they choose when they decide you are finally worthy of their attention. A hand-drawn cat portrait honors that quiet complexity. Whether your companion is regal, mischievous, or somewhere in between, the portrait is built around the details that define them — rendered in graphite on archival paper made to last.

Some portraits are made to remember. A memorial pet portrait is a way to hold onto a companion after they are gone — to honor the years, the routines, the quiet presence that shaped your daily life. Many of the most meaningful commissions I draw are created from a favorite photograph of a pet who is no longer here. If you are ordering a portrait in memory of a beloved animal, I will take extra care with every line, because I know how much it carries.

Every portrait begins on heavyweight watercolor paper with a deckled edge — a soft, hand-torn border that gives each piece the character of a true fine art object. Graphite is applied in layers, building depth and texture gradually until fur, light, and expression feel alive on the page. The materials are archival and professional grade, chosen so your portrait remains rich and intact for decades when displayed behind UV-protective glass and kept out of direct sunlight.

Portraits are available in three paper sizes — 8"×10", 11"×14", and 16"×20" — and can be drawn as a single subject or as a double portrait of two companions together. Each finished piece is signed, carefully packaged, and shipped insured via tracked courier.

From the studio in Los Angeles, portraits ship nationwide across the United States and to collectors worldwide. Wherever you are, your portrait is made by hand, one at a time, and delivered ready to frame and display. If you have been thinking about commissioning a portrait of your companion, I would be honored to draw them.
